Watched Pom Poko, directed by Isao Takahata, last night. So very good, and the English dubbing on the new Disney DVD is great. This movie gets my raving-est recommendation, And if you remember Super Mario 3's Tanooki suit, it will help you make more sense of that too. Don't look up any more info on this if you haven't seen it, just put it on the top of your Netflix queue and watch it.

That's a cool coincidence, first time that's happened to me on lj, I think!

I just want to sit down and watch the story unfold again, or maybe delve into some Japanese mythology. Gonna try to keep the spirit of the movie in mind as I do my animation homework today.

Two years I lived in Japan and I never understood what the hell a tanuki was. Where I lived, tanuki statues about 18" high are pretty popular decorations outside peoples' homes, kind like garden gnomes.

For a while, I thought it was racoon. Then I thought it was a bear. Then I thought it was a made-up creature, like a Jackalope. But it turns out they really exist. They aren't raccoons or bears but tanuki (aka "Magical Raccoon-like Dogs with Shape-Shifting Powers").

Anyhow, for more information on the tanuki, go here.

thanks for the link. really cool animal. you and the wife should watch the movie together! maybe she already has though; apparently it was 1994's biggest Japanese hit.
